JESS DOUGLAS STUDIED ILLUSTRATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH
FROM 2006 AND GRADUATING IN 2009
Growing up in Ibiza, Jess moved to the city of Plymouth to study illustration and found that her work quickly began to rebel against her country upbringing.
“I began reflecting a growing interest in the grunge and grime of the urban environment” she says, and it’s clear to see this reflected in her work. Shop fronts, buses, signage and grungy old streets make up the focus of her work and the resulting images are terrific."
After Graduating In 2009, Jess returned to her home town of Lyme Regis, where she started to crew part time on a local commercial fishing boat.
Here she gained experience and knowledge of the trade from the local fishermen, and ended up as part of the "family".
Having lost all inspiration for drawing since leaving her circle of artist friends, she decided to get her Skipper qualification.
After 9 years of having "artists block", a new boat arrived at Lyme, called the New Seeker, who's skipper she knew. She decided that she'd draw his boat as a way to get out of the rut she'd been in. This resulted in promoting her work via Facebook mainly, and ended up getting more and more orders from captains, and crew, for her to paint their vessels for them.
Two and a half years on, she has painted well over 200 boats of all shapes and sizes. And has sent her work all over the world, to countries such as France, Netherlands, Australia, Canada and numerous orders from the USA.
